The Johan Cruyff Arena, formerly known as the Amsterdam Arena, is a top-tier football stadium holding UEFA Category 4 status. Constructed between 1993 and 1996 at a cost of approximately €140 million, the stadium opened in 1996 and hosts more than just football matches; it is also a venue for American football games, concerts, and various large-scale events. The arena has a capacity of up to 54,990 spectators for sporting events and up to 68,000 for concerts. It is named after the legendary Dutch footballer and coach Johan Cruyff—a three-time Ballon d'Or winner who played for the Netherlands national team as well as for Ajax and Barcelona. The arena regularly hosts home matches for Ajax, which has played there since the stadium opened in 1996, and also serves as a venue for the Dutch national football team. It was formerly the home ground of the Amsterdam Admirals American football team and hosted matches during the UEFA European Championship in 2000. In addition to sports, the Johan Cruyff Arena functions as a concert venue.
